Top players advance to the finals of Huelva 2021

The TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2021 continues its course in the third day held today, December 14 at the Carolina Marín Sports Palace (Huelva). Players from the top of the main draw of the five modalities of the Huelva 2021, one more step away from reaching the round of 16.

If yesterday the Singaporean player Loh Kean Yew gave the surprise by dethroning the favorite Viktor Axelsen [2] (Denmark), the protagonist of today could be Lu Guang Zu (China), who managed to win the match against the number 4 seed of the tournament, Chou Tien Chen (Chinese Taipei). Lu managed to come from behind in a match where the physical condition of both players dominated from the start: 14-21, 21-15 and 21-15.

The Indian delegation is also in luck after finishing today’s day. Lakshya Sen sealed his match against Kenta Nishimoto [15] (Japan) by 22-20, 15-21 and 21-18, and his teammate Kidambi Srikanth [12] did the same against China’s Li Shi Feng (15-21, 21-18 and 21-17).

India completed the feat by adding the victory of Pusarla V. Sindhu [6] in women’s singles, who was convincing and decisive in her first match against Martina Repiska (Slovakia), proving that she comes with strength to “take home the medal”.

The number 1 seed of the competition Tai Tzu Ying (China Taipei), left the Russian player Evgeniya Kosetskaya without option, and beat one of the best European players in two sets: 21-10 and 21-14.

Undoubtedly, one of the singles that kept the audience in suspense until the last moments was the duel between Mia Blichfeldt [13] (Denmark) and Neslihan Yigit (Turkey). Blichfeldt managed to come back after losing the first set (21-17) and turn the score around in the last moments of the third set against a combative Yigit who let slip a 20-19 in her favor.

The vast majority of the men’s doubles matches of the day were played in three sets, showing the high level of the players from the different delegations of the world. Undoubtedly, one of the men’s doubles of the day was the European duel: Fabien Delrue – William Villeger (France) celebrated with enthusiasm their victory after a tight match against the English Ben Lane – Sean Vendy [13]. The French duo closed the match with a final score of 21-19, 12-21 and 21-15.

In women’s doubles, the local players Clara Azurmendi – Beatriz Corrales lost their victory against the Japanese number 7 seeds of the tournament, Nami Matsuyama – Chiharu Shida. The progression of the Spaniards to reach Huelva 2021 throughout the season has been overwhelming, even so, they have not been able to beat one of the favorite couples to win the tournament, defending at all times their high level. Azurmendi and Corrales were proud to participate in front of an enthusiastic and expectant crowd, and were hopeful about the next sporting challenges.

One of the unexpected surprises of the day came almost at the end of the day. In the mixed doubles, the English duo Marcus Ellis – Lauren Smith, who were seeded number 6 in the competition, were defeated by a renewed and strong Kyohei Yamashita – Naru Shinoya (Japan). The Japanese duo sentenced their match with the score in their favor: 21-16, 18-21 and 21-15.

As a sign of the high level of the players participating in the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2021, the expectation is lived until the last match of the day, where the Olympic runners-up in Tokyo 2020, and world champions in 2019 and 2018, Zheng Si Wei – Huang Ya Qiong [1] (China), fell defeated by the determined and patient Chang Tak Ching – NG Wing Yung (Hong Kong) who came from behind: 16-21, 21-13 and 21-17.
